Bryant Orjiako Biography, Date Of Birth, Early Life, Family And Education

Bryant Orjiako was born on the 1st of October, 1960 to the family of Daniel Orjiako, a native of Uli, Anambra State, Nigeria. In a 20-14 interview with africanbusinessmagazine.com, he revealed that two factors that contributed to his success in the business world where his training as a surgeon and the family he came from. 

According to the billionaire entrepreneur, he inherited business genes from his family. His late father was a businessman and all around him where business opportunities either going begging or being handled very poorly.

After completing his elementary and secondary education, Orjiako gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the prestigious University of Calabar (UniCal), obtaining his M.B.B.Ch. degree in 1985. He further trained as a General Surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos.

In 1996, he sub-specialised in orthopaedic and trauma surgery and became a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. He completed the Owner/President Management (OPM) program of the Harvard Business School in 2006.

Career

ABC Orjiako ventured into private business with interests in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil industry, shipping, construction, real estate development, banking insurance, and pharmaceuticals. He went into a full-time business in 1996 after over eleven years of active medical practice.

He established and managed various companies in the upstream, downstream and service sectors of the Nigerian oil and gas industry, including; Zebbra Energy Limited, Abbeycourt Energy Services Limited, Abbeycourt Trading Company Limited and Shebah Exploration and Production Company Limited.

He co-founded Seplat in 2009 with Austin Avuru, who served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) until 2019 when he retired. He however still remains on the Board as a Non-Executive Director. Seplat has in its four years of operations, achieved remarkable results and is now considered the industry benchmark in terms of management, efficiency and corporate social responsibility.

Dr. ABC Orjiako is on the board of companies in various sectors; he is the chairman of Neimeth Pharmaceutical International PLC and also a director of MPI. By invitation of the London Stock Exchange, he became a founding member of the London Stock Exchange Group’s Africa Advisory Group (“LAAG”), a select group working towards generating and channelling ideas and problem solve towards the issues affecting the African continent from a commercial and social perspective.

Personal Life

Dr. ABC Orjiako is happily married to Henrietta Orjiako and the union is blessed with four children, two girls and two boys. He is a devoted Christain and philanthropist. In 2003, Pope John Paul II, in recognition of his services to humanity bestowed on him a Knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory the Great (KSGG).

Dr. ABC Orjiako's numerous humanitarian activities and entrepreneurial achievements have earned him several awards and recognitions, including:
• Distinguished Alumnus Award and Doctor of Sciences (D.Sc. Honoris Causa) by the University of Calabar, Nigeria (2001)
• Platinum Award of the West African College of Surgeons (2006)
• National Honours as an Officer of the Federal Republic (“OFR”), conferred on him by the President of Nigeria in 2012
• Zik (Nnamdi Azikiwe) Prize in the Professional Leadership category by the Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre (PPRAC) 
• African Business Executive of the Year by the Oil and Gas Council (2014)

Philanthropy

In 1996, Dr. Bryant Orjiako founded the Daniel Orjiako Memorial Foundation (DOMF) in honour of his late father, Chief Daniel O. Orjiako. The foundation has since inception, executed numerous programmes in rural Nigerian communities in education, healthcare services and economic empowerment through agriculture aimed at providing welfare and breaking the poverty cycle.
