Lauretta Onochie Biography and Career

Lauretta Onochie hails from Anioma, Delta State, Nigeria. She holds a post-graduate certificate from the University of Greenwich. She has also undergone different certificate courses at Harvard University.

Lauretta Onochie was appointed Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media in January 2016. Prior to her appointment, she worked as a lecturer at New City College, Epping Forest Campus from August 2005 to May 2011. Upon leaving her lecturing job, she started working as a consultant at AfricaFirst, a position she held until her federal appointment.

In October 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Onochie for confirmation by the Senate as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing Delta State. The information was disclosed by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, while reading the President’s letter of request, at the plenary session in the Senate.

The information didn't go too well with Nigerians, who believed that such delicate positions should be given to someone that has been positively partisan.

A Senator from the North-West said: “Going by Section 14(2a) of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution as amended, ‘a member of the commission shall be non-partisan and a person of unquestionable integrity.

The report that Lauretta Onochie has been married five times is false, she has only been married once in her life and her family live in the United Kingdom. The lecture and pastor is, however, a single mother.
