• Dr. Ikemba Iweala hails from Umuahia, the capital Abia State while his wife, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala originally hailed from Ogwashi-Ukwu, Delta State. Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's father, Professor Benjamin Kachukwu Okonjo was until his death, the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State.

• Ikemba Iweala had his early education in Nigeria, from his primary to his university education. His early medical training was at the prestigious University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He also completed his compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the centre’s physician at the Rural Health Center, Igbaja in Kwara State.

He completed his training in General Surgery/Trauma and Neurosurgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester and various other hospitals in England.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

• After completing his training, he practised briefly at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and following further work at the University of Maryland Medical Systems, Baltimore, he became a clinical instructor in Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC.

• Dr. Ikemba Iweala is a philanthropist and the chairman of the IKE Foundation for Autism (IFA), a non-profit and non-governmental organization established in 2008. The organisation has a goal to enable all persons living within the autism spectrum disorder and related needs to achieve their full potential and live productive lives.

• Dr. Ikemba Iweala's marriage to Ngozi is blessed with four children; one daughter, Onyinye Iweala and three sons, Uzodinma Iweala, Okechukwu Iweala and Uchechi Iweala. 
  - Onyinye Iweala is an assistant professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology.
  - Uzodinma Iweala is an award-winning author and medical doctor. His debut novel, 'Beasts of No Nation', was published in 2005 by  Harper Perennial. A feature film was adapted by Cary Fukunaga, starring Abraham Attah as Agu and Idris Elba as the commander. The movie was premiered on Netflix on October 16, 2015.
  - Okechukwu Iweala is a graduate of Social Studies from the prestigious Harvard University.
  - Uchechi Iweala is an Orthopedic surgeon and spine surgery specialist in Catonsville, Columbia and Eldersburg.
