The Importance Of Afforestation

Increase in the supply of timber and other forest products: Afforestation is developed by companies to grow trees and enhance the production of charcoal and timber. It has aided local industries to improve the quantity of its products supplied to the consumers.
Prevention of soil erosion: The role of tree roots in keeping the soil together cannot be under-emphasized. This has helped in previous years to prevent desertification and the wearing away of the soil.
Solving climatic change problems: Planting more trees on Earth means increasing the rate of photosynthesis on Earth. This also plays a very important role in decreasing the greenhouse effect.
Providing a habitat for wildlife: Planting of trees in the forests means providing more habitats, sources of food and protection to many different species of animals and sometimes humans. By encouraging afforestation, we are wildlife and the ecosystems survive.
Tourist attraction: Trees take in carbon dioxide and emit oxygen and this has helped to preserve the ecological splendor of the landscape which attracts tourists from different parts of the Africa and beyond.

Disadvantages Of Afforestation

It can affect biodiversity: If managed improperly, this afforestation can lead to a reduction of biodiversity in the ecosystem. Modification and change of some particular biomes, introduction of non-native (invasive) species, reduction in stream flow and also loss of agricultural revenue.
Real opportunity cost: This happens when land that should have been used for agricultural purposes, building of industries, business and residential centers are being used for afforestation.

Methods Of Afforestation

The following methods are adopted for the process of afforestation:
Production forests: They are forest that lie in the flat land and are managed for high quantity of production.
Limited production forests: They are less-fertile areas with hill topography of more than 1000 meters altitude.
Reserve or conservation forests: These include parks, sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, sacred grooves and all areas that are ecologically fragile. These areas need protection from fodder starved cattle and fuel starved villages.
Commercial forestry: These is to supply goods and services and meet the basic needs of local consumers like fodder, firewood, fiber timbre, fertilizer, and others. They also supply materials like plywood, rayon, fiber board paper and pulp, timber, matchwood and silvichemicals to industries.
