Born on the 22nd of April, 1987 as John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, the 6ft. 2in. tall midfielder was born and raised in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He is an Igbo, and a native of Anambra State, Eastern Nigeria. His father, Mr Micheal Obi was a business man and into transportation business.
He got the name, Mikel from a mistake by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) who had submitted that instead of the original Micheal, that was during the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Cup tournament held in Finland.

Well, that had taken his name ever since then and he prefers to go by that!
Mikel is married to Olga Diyachenko, a Russian model and they have two kids.

Football Career And Life In The Sports Entertainment World

Having started football as early as age 12, Mikel was picked up then by the Pepsi Football Academy and selected to play for one of the Nigerian top clubs in Nigeria, the Plateau United. He later joined an Oslo based football club, Lyn Football which was in Norway.

He however came into limelight when he played very well in the 2005 World Cup Youth Championship, help in the Netherlands and Nigeria reached the finals before loosing to Argentina, 2-1. He was voted the second best player after Lionel Messi and was awarded a silver ball.
After the match, Man U and Chelsea were bidding to sign him and he went for Chelsea.
He however signed for Tianjin TEDA, a Chinese club on a free transfer.
His salary went from £82,000 per week in Chelsea to £140,000.
