Akinwunmi Dapo Ambode is a Nigerian politician who served as the immediate past Executive Governor of Lagos State.
Before running for the public office, Ambode worked as a civil servant for 27 years, and a financial consultant. He is also the CEO of Brandsmiths Consulting Limited – a firm that specializes in public sector finance management.
Ambode began his tenure as Lagos State governor in on 29 May 2015, succeeding former governor Babatunde Fashola. He was succeeded by Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Akinwunmi Ambode was born on the 14th of June, 1963 in Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria. Ambode is the sixth child in a family of 10 children. His father, Festus Akinwale Ambode was a teacher while his mother, Christianah Oluleye Ambode was an entrepreneur, who ran a sewing business in her prime.
Ambode began his early education in 1969, at St. Jude’s Primary School, Ebutte Meta, Lagos, Nigeria. While still in Primary 5, he sat for the National Common Entrance Examinations and got admitted into the Federal Government College, Warri in the same year.
He completed his secondary education and gained admission into the University of Lagos where he studied Accounting. He graduated from the higher institution at the age of 21, and immediately proceeded for his mandatory National Youth Service Corps, serving with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sokoto, Sokoto State.
Akinwunmi Ambode also has certificates from the best institutions in Europe and the United States, including Cranfield School of Management, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, John F. Kennedy School of Government in Harvard and Institute of Management Development (Lausanne, Switzerland).


Akinwunmi Ambode served as the Assistant Treasurer, Badagry Local Government, Lagos State from 1988 until 1991 when he was posted to Somolu LG as an Auditor. He was further transferred to Alimosho LGA as the Council's treasurer. In addition, he also served as the Council’s treasurer in Shomolu and Mushin.
In 2001, Ambode became the acting Auditor General for Local Government, Lagos State, a position that was confirmed by the State House of Assembly.
In January 2005, he was appointed the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance. He also served as the accountant general for Lagos State from 2006 to 2012.

In August 2012, Akinwunmi Ambode voluntarily retired after working for 27 years in the civil service. He founded Brandsmiths Consulting Limited to provide Public Finance and Management Consulting services to government at all levels, its parastatals and agencies.

Political Career

Akinwunmi Ambode participated in the 2015 gubernatorial elections in Lagos State under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He defeated PDP candidate Jimi Agbaje, and AD candidate, Bolaji Ogunseye.
In 2019, Ambode lost in the gubernatorial primary election to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, denying him an opportunity to run for the second term. His support for the Sanwoolu campaign, however, eventually brought about a smooth transition in the state.

Personal Life

Akinwunmi Ambode got married to Bolanle Patience Ambode (née Odukomaiya) in 1991. Bolanle formerly worked as a staffer of the now-defunct People’s Bank of Nigeria before she left to join Instant Finance Nigeria Limited and later Aguagem Consulting. She is now the CEO/Managing Director of Rehoboth Chops and Confectioneries Limited.
Akinwunmi and Bolanle Ambode have two children together.
