Top Seven Richest Families in Nigeria 2020
In this article, we'd be exploring the top 7 richest, and of course, most influential families in Nigeria with assets running into billions of dollars.
Nigeria is one of the many countries in their world where the margin between the richest and the poorest is very wide. Like, you'd see a number of citizens worth billions of dollars, and so many others still struggling to eat three square meals.
There are so many influential families in Nigeria, especially those directly linked to politics. This article won't be listing out all, but we'll try our best to sort out some very popular ones with their assets and investments in Nigeria.

Who are the richest families in Nigeria?

Join me as I point out some of the richest and most influential Nigerian families. I'd be sorting them in alphabetical order as this is not a list of who's richer than who.

• Briggs Family

The Lulu-Briggs family is one of the most famous and wealthiest in Kalabari ethnic nationality in Nigeria. The head of this family, Chief Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs was one of the few Ijaws that captured oil wells or oil mining licence (OML) early and did not sell the licence.
He instead, turned his into what we now know as Moni Pulo Petroleum Development Company (MPPDC), a privately owned indigenous oil and gas company with branches in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Another prominent figure in the family is Mrs Seinye Lulu-Briggs, the wife of Chief Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs and CEO of Rachael Hotels Limited.

• Dantata Family

Alhassan Dantata was a Northern Nigerian trader in kola nuts and groundnut. During his time, he was one of the richest people in Northern Nigeria.
Do you remember the groundnut pyramids? They were his inventions, and he made much money exporting the groundnuts to Europe.
And guess what? Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the richest black man (net worth $8.3 billion) is a member of the family. 

• Ibru Family

Michael Ibru was a Nigerian businessman from Agbara-Otor, Delta State. He was the head of the Ibru Organization, one of the largest conglomerates in Nigeria. 

The Ibru organization was founded in 1956 and have various interest in many endeavours including shipping, aviation, oil and gas, banking and the agric sector.

Chief Ibru has five wives, and seventeen children, the most prominent being Olorogun Oskar Ibru (who heads Ibafon Ports) and Oboden Ibru (who was a key player in Oceanic bank International PLC).

• Igbinedion family

The Igbinedion family is another Nigerian family that is worth being on the list. The head of the Igbinedion family is Igbinedion family, a Nigerian businessman and traditional aristocrat from Okada Town in Edo State.
His businesses include a private bank, gold, diamond, marble mines over Africa, oil refinery, Igbinedion University and a large number of hotels.

Among the prominent members of the Igbinedion family include Lucky, who was a two-term Local Government chairman and two-term Governor of Edo State, Charles, who was a Local Government chairman and one time Edo State Commissioner of Education, and Peter, who was the managing director of the Nigerian Aviation Authority.
His daughter, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion-Akenzua, who is married to Avan Akenzua, a dynastic Prince of Benin Kingdom currently serves in the House of Representatives in Abuja as a representative of Ovia Federal Constituency in Edo State. 

• Otedola Family

I know you must have heard of Femi Otedola, the founder of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd, and the owner of a number of other businesses across shipping, real estate and finance. Another prominent personality in the family is Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy.
But the wealth didn't start from Femi Otedola, his father, Sir Michael Otedola was a Nigerian politician and the former Governor of Lagos State, Nigeria. Next time you visit Lagos and happen cross over the Otedola bridge, you should know who it was named after.

• Saraki Family

Saraki Family
The Saraki family is the most influential family in Kwara State. You must have heard of Bukola Saraki, the President of the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2019 and head of the 8th Nigeria National Assembly. Bukola Saraki also served as the Governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011.
Bukola's father, Olusola Abubakar Saraki was in 1977, elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that produced the 1979 constitution. He also served as the senate leader.
Another prominent member of the Saraki family is Gbemisola Ruqayyah Saraki, Bukola's sister. She is currently serving as the Minister of State for Transportation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

• Tinubu Family

The Tinubu family is not only one of the most influential families in Lagos State, but in Nigeria as a whole. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the head of the family was a one-time former governor of Lagos State and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is also among the top 10 richest politicians in Nigeria.
Another prominent member of the Tinubu family is his wife, Oluremi Tinubu who is currently serving as a Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Nigerian National Assembly.
