Chikwe Ihekweazu Biography and Career

Chikwe Ihekweazu was born in 1971 to a Nigerian-German parents. After completing his primary and secondary education, he gained admission to study medicine and surgery at the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He further travelled to Germany for his Masters degree in Public Health from Heinrich-Heine University.

In 2007,  he was certified an Infectious Diseases Epidemiologist and a Consultant in Public Health Medicine at United Kingdom’s Faculty of Public Health.

Chikwe Ihekweazu was emerged the first Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) after the agency became an independent agency on 13 November 2018 following Nigeria’s National Assembly bill and act.

He was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on 15 August 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari. 

Prior to his appointment, he also served as the acting director of the West Africa Centre for Disease Control. He has also handled several positions in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Ihekweazu has held several consultancy roles with the World Health Organisation, in response to major outbreaks and supporting the design of surveillance systems in Nigeria, Lesotho, Liberia, Turkey, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Geneva, Swaziland and Botswana.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was also part of a team of experts of the World Health Organisation on a joint mission to study the epidemic in China.

In 2013, he was appointed as the Honorary Senior Lecturer on Infectious Diseases, University College London.

Personal Life

Chikwe Ihekweazu got married to his wife, Vivianne Ihekweazu in 2003 and the married is blessed with two children. Vivianne Ihekweazu is the managing director of Nigeria Health Watch, a health communication and advocacy organisation based in Nigeria.
