Tolu Ogunlesi was born on the 3rd of March, 1982 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Nigerian parents. He has spent most of his life in Nigeria, attending the International School Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.
After obtaining his SSCE, Ogunlesi gained admission to study Pharmacy at the prestigious University of Ibadan, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) degree. He also holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, UK.

Career

On 18 February 2016, Tolu Ogunlesi was appointed as the Special Assistant on Digital/New Media to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Prior to his appointment, he had worked as a Features Editor and Editorial Board member of NEXT Newspaper. He also worked as a West Africa Editor for The Africa Report magazine from 2014 to 2015.

As a journalist, his articles have appeared in top magazines, including; The Guardian (Lagos), The Guardian (UK), Tell Magazine, Daily Independent (Nigeria), Forbes Africa, Premium Times, HuffPost, New Age, Business Day (Nigeria) and Financial Times.

As a creative writer, Ogunlesi has a number of works to his credit. He is the author of a collection of poetry, Listen to the Geckos Singing from a Balcony (Bewrite Books, 2004), and a novella, Conquest & Conviviality (Hodder Murray, 2008). Among publications in which his fiction and poetry have appeared are Farafina, PEN Anthology of New Nigerian Writing, The London Magazine, Stanford’s Black Arts Quarterly, Nano2ales, Sable, Wasafiri, World Literature Today, Stimulus Respond, Litro, Magma, Orbis and Brand.

Personal Life

Tolu Ogunlesi got married to his beautiful wife, Kemi Agboola on Saturday, November 29, 2014, in Ibadan. Their traditional marriage took place on Friday, November 28, 2014, a day before the white wedding. The union is blessed with a girl.

Awards and Recognition

In 2006, Tolu Ogunlesi was awarded a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg poetry prize. In 2008, he got the Nordic Africa Institute Guest Writer Fellowship and a year later, the University of Birmingham honoured him with a Cadbury Visiting Fellowship.
He has won the annual CNN Multichoice African Journalist Awards twice in 2009 (the Arts and Culture Prize) and in 2013 (Coca-Cola Company Economics & Business Award), as well as being shortlisted for the inaugural PEN/Studzinski literary prize.
