Rauf Aregbesola was born on the 25th of May, 1957 into a family of both Christians and Muslims. He had his primary and secondary education in Ondo State before proceeding to Ibadan where he gained admission to study Mechanical Engineering at The Polytechnic, graduating in 1980.
While at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Rauf was also an active supporter of other progressive students' movements nationwide, which earned him, for instance, a life membership in the National Association of Technological Students. He also served as Speaker of the Students' Parliament between 1977 to 1978 and the President of the Black Nationalist Movement between 1978 to 1980.

Political Career

Rauf Aregbesola became an elected delegate to the Social Democratic Party Inaugural Local Government Area Congress in June 1990. A month later, he also became a delegate to its first National Convention in Abuja.

Upon Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999, Aregbesola was a ranking member of the Alliance for Democracy, led by Senator Bola Tinubu (who later became the Lagos State Governor). He (Aregbesola) also became the Director of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation (BATCO) and contributed a lot towards the Tinubu's victory at the polls. Aregbesola was appointed as the Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure upon the inauguration of Tinubu as governor.

Rauf Aregbesola ran for Governor of the state of Osun in the 2007 elections on the platform of the then Action Congress (AC) and his main rival, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinyola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was returned elected. He appealed the decision and on the 26th November 2010 was declared the winner. He was returned as Osun state governor on August 9th, 2014 for another 4 years’ tenure.

Rauf Aregbesola was appointed as the Minister of the Federal Ministry of Interior of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari. He currently superintends over some of Nigeria' paramilitary services namely; the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Prisons Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

He is happily married to Mrs Sherifat Aregbesola. Mrs Aregbesola has been described as a symbol of motherhood and an exceptionally supportive wife to her husband. She has devoted a lot of her energy, resources and time to a statewide grassroots campaign to bring about attitudinal change among people in the area of Total Community Sanitation, an effort which has been recognized by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The marriage is blessed with two children namely; Kabiru Aregbesola and Shakirat Aregbesola.
