Bola Tinubu was born on the 29th of March, 1952 in Osun State, Nigeria. His mother, Chief Abibatu Mogaji was a Nigerian business magnate and the Ìyál'ọ́jà of Nigeria. During her lifetime, Mogaji was the leader of the market women's association in Lagos State. She also served as the Iyaloja of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men. She died on Saturday, the 15th of June, 2013 at the age of 96 in her home at Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State. 

Tinubu attended St. John's Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos and Children's Home School in Ibadan, South West of Nigeria before travelling to the United States in 1975 to continue his academic pursuit. At the US, he first gained admission to study at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, and then at Chicago State University, graduating in 1979 with a B.Sc degree in Accounting.

Career and Politics

While in the US, Bola Tinubu worked at different American companies, including; Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation. He joined Mobil Oil Nigeria upon his return to Nigerian in 1983, where he later became an executive of the company.

Asiwaju began his political career in 1992 when he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was elected as the senator representing the Lagos West constituency in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic.

Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition after the 12th June 1993, presidential elections were annulled. He went on an exile in 1994, following the seizure of power as military head of state of General Sani Abacha and returned to the country in 1998 after Abacha's death.

Bola Tinubu was a protégé of Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo in the run-up to the 1999 elections and he went on to win the AD primaries for the Lagos State governorship elections. He was subsequently elected as Lagos State governor after winning the general elections. He was re-elected for his second tenure in 2003.

Bola Tinubu is happily married to Oluremi Tinubu, the current Senator of the Lagos Central Senatorial District. While Bola Tinubu is a Muslim, his wife is a devoted Christain and an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. The union is blessed with children.
