Chemicals and Formulation Required For Producing Air Freshener

Caustic Soda: This can also be called sodium hydroxide and it exists as solid pearls. It is very soluble in water and dissolves to give a basic solution. The major function of the caustic soda is to enhance the perfume absorption by the mixture because of the oil base of perfumes.
- Sulphonic Acid: Sulphonic acid is a highly viscous and dark brown liquid that helps in the neutralization of the caustic soda solution. It also functions in creating a room for the absorption of the perfume.
- Formalin: Formalin is a harsh-smelling disinfectant and it's also in a liquid form. It is what aids in the killing of the bacteria and germs in the surroundings where the air freshener is applied. Formalin should be handled with care because it's harmful to the human skin.
- Colorant: This aids in giving colour to the formulation and it's needed in only a small quantity.
- Perfume: Perfume helps in converting the mix into an aromatic structure and also gives the air fresheners its pleasant smell. The type of perfume to choose depends on the manufacturer.

Sulphonic acid ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯½ cup
Water ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ 4 liters


Attractiveness any desired colour and quantity
Emulsifier Sodium laurel ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ 0.5%
Colorant ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ to taste
Extender Propylene glycol ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯10%
Preservative Boric acid ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯1%

Tools and Equipment Required For Producing Air Freshener

- Filling and sealing unit: Both the manual or automatic filling and sealing unit can serve the same purpose, it's left over to you to choose. It is however not compulsory because the filling and sealing process can be manually handled.
- Measuring device: This is the device for measuring the materials, both a measuring cylinder and weighing scale are needed.
- Mixer: It doesn't matter if it's the motorized or manual mixer, it'll do for you.
- Mixing tank: It is to prevent the mixer from rusting and it can be stainless steel or plastic.
- Storage tanks: It is advisable to use the stainless steel or plastic types.
Other equipment that will be needed include laboratory tools like pH paper and personal protection equipment.

Method of Making The Air Freshener

- Wash and drain the mixer
- Clean your filter properly to remove every dirt
- Measure the specified quantity of water into the mixer and add the specified caustic soda pearls
- Gradually stir to dissolve the pearls
- The solution should have started generating some heat, the next step is to measure the sulphonic acid into the mixer and the increase the stirring rate
- Stir the mixture until it completely mixes with the whole solution mix properly
- Check the pH level of the water to make sure that the acid has neutralized properly.The pH should be in neutral stage, that is between 7 and 8 
- Add the formalin and colorant and stir very well to mix the whole solution properly then finally add the perfume.It forms the base of the air freshener.
- Allow the solution for 24 hours so it can dissolve, then filter it and package immediately for sales.

How To Know If The Air Freshener Formed Properly

- It should have a nice fragrance
- The smell must not be chocking
- It should not foam excessively
